Pigmentation Is Personal: Why Your Treatment Plan Should Be Too

Your Skin Has a Story

No two patients come to us with the same pigment, so no two patients leave with the same plan. Brown spots, melasma, and the marks left behind by breakouts can look nearly identical in the mirror. Beneath the surface, they behave very differently.

That difference matters. A treatment that clears one person’s sun spots beautifully can make another person’s melasma darker. This is why, at Dermalogic Laser Center, we never start with a treatment. We start with you.

This October, our focus is pigment. Here is how we think about it, and how we decide whether medical-grade skincare, the VI Peel, IPL, or CO2 laser is the right fit for your skin.

Not All Brown Spots Are the Same

The first step in treating pigment is knowing exactly what kind you have. Most of what we see falls into three categories.

Sun spots (solar lentigines). These are the flat brown spots that appear on the face, chest, and hands after years of sun exposure. They tend to sit near the surface of the skin and often respond very well to light-based treatment.

Melasma. Melasma shows up as soft, blotchy patches, often across the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. It is driven by hormones, sunlight, visible light, and even heat. Because it is so reactive, aggressive treatment can trigger it to rebound darker. Melasma is managed, not cured, and it calls for a patient, strategic approach.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). These are the marks left behind after acne, a rash, a burn, or other irritation. PIH is especially common in deeper skin tones. It usually improves with time and the right care, but the wrong treatment can create more inflammation and more pigment.

Many patients have more than one type at once. Sorting out which is which is the foundation of a plan that works.

How We Decide

During your consultation, we evaluate five things before recommending any treatment.

  1. The type of pigment. Sun damage, melasma, and PIH each call for a different strategy.
  2. How deep it sits. Pigment near the surface responds differently than pigment deeper in the skin.
  3. Your skin type. Some treatments that work beautifully on fair skin carry a higher risk of burns or rebound darkening on deeper skin tones. Your skin type shapes which tools are safe and which settings we use.
  4. Your lifestyle and downtime. A few days of flaking is very different from a week of healing. We plan around your calendar, your events, and your time outdoors.
  5. Your goals. Some patients want to fade a few spots. Others want to address texture, fine lines, and overall sun damage at the same time. Your goals help determine how far we go.

The answer to those five questions, not a trend or a package, is what guides your plan.

Your Treatment Options

Every pigment plan at Dermalogic is built from four tools. Most patients benefit from a combination.

Medical-Grade Skincare

Skincare is the foundation of every pigment plan. Prescription-strength and medical-grade ingredients help calm pigment production, even out tone, and prepare skin to respond better to procedures. For melasma, a consistent home regimen is often the most important part of treatment. It also protects the results you achieve in the office. There is no downtime.

The VI Peel

The VI Peel is a chemical peel that combines several pigment-fighting ingredients in a single treatment. It is a strong choice for uneven tone, dullness, and melasma-prone skin, and it can be used across a wide range of skin types. The application is quick and comfortable. Expect visible peeling for about a week, followed by brighter, more even skin. A series is often recommended for best results.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL uses broad-spectrum light to target sun spots, freckling, and redness. It is ideal for sun-related pigment in lighter skin types. After treatment, spots typically darken and then flake away over one to two weeks, with minimal social downtime. Because IPL uses heat, it is usually not our first choice for melasma or for deeper skin tones.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

CO2 is our most transformative option. It is best for patients whose pigment comes with textural changes, fine lines, or significant sun damage. By resurfacing the skin and stimulating new collagen, it improves tone and texture together. CO2 requires more downtime, careful skin preparation, and thoughtful patient selection, which is exactly why it should be performed in a physician-led setting.

The One Thing Every Plan Includes

Daily broad-spectrum sun protection. For pigment, a tinted mineral sunscreen that also helps block visible light is often recommended. Without it, pigment will always find its way back.

The Dermalogic Difference

Pigment is one of the most rewarding concerns to treat, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Experience is what makes the difference.

Dermalogic Laser Center is a physician-led practice. Dr. Amy Krachman is board-certified in family medicine and brings more than 20 years of experience in aesthetic medicine. She personally evaluates your skin, identifies the type of pigment you have, and designs a plan that fits your skin type, your schedule, and your goals.

What that looks like in practice:

  • A true consultation, not a sales pitch. We take time to understand your skin history, your past treatments, and what you want to see.
  • Multiple tools under one roof. Because we offer skincare, the VI Peel, IPL, and CO2, we can recommend what is right for you rather than what happens to be available.
  • Safety first. We screen carefully for melasma, skin type, and other factors that raise the risk of rebound pigment, and we prepare your skin before more intensive treatments.
  • A plan, not a one-time fix. We sequence treatments thoughtfully and build a maintenance routine that protects your results long term.
  • Natural results. Our goal is clear, even, healthy-looking skin that still looks like you.

In a boutique, private setting, every visit is personal from start to finish.

Why Fall Is the Season to Start

Autumn is the ideal time to begin treating pigment. With shorter days and less time spent outdoors, your skin has a better environment to heal after peels and laser treatments. Starting now also gives you time to complete a series before spring and summer return.

That said, sun protection still matters in October. UV and visible light reach your skin year-round, even on cloudy days, so daily sunscreen remains part of every plan.
